Iata cea mai tanara speranta a jazz-ului american. Trombone Shorty (Troy Andrews pe numele lui adevarat) canta de la 3 ani. La 6 ani Troy era “band leader”. La 8 ani, un bar din Tremé district, New Orleands (locul in care s-a nascut) i-a luat numele. Cand avea 12 ani, Bono si Edge dansau pe bar la unul din concertele lui.

“There was this little funk band, but they were all playing brass instruments, which is something I’d never heard of or seen before. We were just mesmerized by him. I ended up with Bono, after a few tequilas, dancing with a bunch of girls on the top of the bar. It was one of those sort of nights.” Edge (U2)

La 18 ani Troy a intrat in trupa de concert a lui Lenny Kravitz. La 24 de ani, in 2010, Trombone Shorty a lansat primul lui album cu “national coverage” (in US), denumit “Backatown”, alaturi de Orleans Avenue, trupa care il acompaniaza, formata din Dwayne “Big D” Williams (percutie), Mike Ballard (bas), Joey Peebles (tobe), Pete Murano (chitara) si Dan Oestreicher (baritone sax).

Troy si-a auto-intitulat stilul ca “supafunkrock”, iar albumul “Backatown” este energie pura. Cu invitati precum Lenny Kravitz, fostul lui sef, pe “Something Beautiful” si Allen Toussaint, cantand la pian pe “On Your Way Down” (o interpretare a cantecului lui Allen Toussaint, acesta fiind dealtfel si singurul cantec din cele 14 de pe album care nu e scris de Troy), TS a captat energia concertelor de jazz-funk intr-un mod foarte riguros si exact, cel mai probabil o influenta din perioada cand a cantat cu Lenny Kravitz.

E clar ca e jazz, dar e si rock. Si linia vocala este excelenta, Backatown este cel mai proaspat candidat pe lista de cele mai bune albume ale lui 2010.
